Ultrasonic Liposuction: What is it?

Ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) is a body contouring procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to eliminate fat from various areas of the body. A small probe is inserted into the fat layers, transmitting sound energy to break apart fatty tissue before it is removed. Patients with fat deposits that are not resolved with exercise and diet are excellent candidates for UAL.

When compared to traditional liposuction, ultrasonic liposuction has the ability to possibly tighten the skin to a better contour. It is also less invasive than traditional liposuction because it breaks apart the fat before it is removed. This allows for more complete fat removal with less damage to the surrounding tissues. At the same time, ultrasonic liposuction has the ability to avoid causing trauma to nerves and blood vessels.

Ultrasonic liposuction is usually performed at a state-accredited surgical center under general anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure that can last from one to several hours, depending on how many areas require treatment.

Costs

Patients can expect to pay slightly more for ultrasonic liposuction than traditional liposuction because it is a specialized procedure that requires more equipment to be used during treatment. Although the total cost of UAL depends on various factors, including a surgeon’s fee, facility fees, and anesthesia fees, the overall price of each procedure typically depends on the number of areas to be treated.

Recovery Time

Since ultrasonic liposuction is easier on the body than traditional liposuction procedures, there is less recovery time associated with this treatment. Given the busy lives that many of my patients live, I have found that this is often the deciding factor for most of them.
