Tummy Tuck Recovery

After any type of surgical procedure, a proper recovery is crucial to achieving the most favorable results. This holds particularly true for a tummy tuck procedure. Once tummy tuck surgery is complete, it is very important for patients to follow postoperative instructions to ensure a safe and effective recovery.

Every patient is different, which means that one person may recover from surgery more quickly than another. In most cases, patients should expect at least two weeks of downtime from work and regular activities, although it may take up to a month for some patients to make a full recovery.

The First Couple Days

During this time, it is imperative that patients rest as much as possible as this will help alleviate some discomfort and swelling. However, some ambulation (walking three times a day) is required to lower complications such as blood clots. Postoperative pain is expected and can be alleviated with prescribed pain medication, including a muscle relaxer.

Drains placed at the time of surgery are typically removed in about 7 days. You will then be able to shower or bathe. Stitch removal is not required since all of your stitches will be beneath the skin and will dissolve over time.

The Next Few Weeks

Throughout the next couple of weeks a compression garment will need to be worn. This not only reduces swelling, but it also helps the body take on its new shape. Any forms of strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first six weeks to ensure a proper recovery and the best results possible.
