Liposuction Defined
Posted July 30, 2013 in Liposuction Category, UncategorizedOne of the most popular body contouring procedures today is liposuction surgery. This fat-reducing procedure has greatly advanced in the last 10 years, which has allowed patients to achieve a slimmer, more toned appearance with minimal downtime and scarring.
Lipoplasty, as it is medically referred to, is often chosen after natural means of weight loss have not provided desired results. Although a healthy diet and regular exercise can aid in shedding excess pounds, there may be stubborn fat deposits that can only be removed via liposuction.
Liposuction Techniques
Nowadays, patients can choose from various liposuction techniques based on their body type, desired results, and my professional recommendation. These techniques include fluid injection, tumescent technique, super-wet technique, and ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty.
Fluid Injection
When undergoing the fluid injection method, a medical solution is injected into the treated area to help remove fat. Through small incisions made in the target area, a long tube called a cannula is inserted to help break up the fat. Using a vacuum suction device, the fat is then removed and the area is carefully sculpted to a slender appearance.
Tumescent
During the tumescent technique, a larger amount of fluid is injected, which also contains a local anesthetic to help reduce the need for additional anesthesia. The fat deposits are easier to remove and provide patients with less bleeding and bruising during recovery.
Super-Wet
In order to reduce pain, bruising, and bleeding even more, patients may opt for the super-wet technique. This technique entails using equal parts of the fluid injected to the fat being removed.
Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL)
The most advanced technique in liposuction surgery is ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL). The cannula used for this procedure emits ultrasonic energy and heat that helps liquefy the fat deposits. This allows for easier removal and less trauma to the treated area as well as the ability to remove more fat with less blood loss.
When choosing to undergo liposuction, it is important to carefully consider the various techniques offered to you. However, it is vital to know that a surgeon with extensive experience will guide you in choosing the proper technique. I always recommend you choose a surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Be certain that you have all your questions answered and that you view your surgeon’s before and after photos to see examples of past patients’ results.
