How to Get Rid of Acne Scars
Posted September 11, 2013 in Laser Treatment, Skin and LaserAll of us have had some type of acne problem in our lifetime. The most frustrating issue with acne is residual scarring that can be hard to hide or conceal with makeup. This can be difficult to treat because some scars are deep and resist certain treatments. However, there are several options that can help reduce the appearance of scarring.
Laser Treatment
Laser treatments, such as the Palomar Icon Aesthetic System, that I offer in my Arizona office can remove the outer layer of the skin and increase collagen production. As the tissues heal from the skin removal process, new and healthy skin will grow and smooth out the marks that were left from acne. This is a great option for those who suffer from surface scarring and may even be helpful in lessening the appearance of deeper scarring. However, deep acne scars are sometimes better treated with the Erbium Laser performed under general anesthesia at a surgical center.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is another option for those with acne scarring. This treatment uses a rotating wire brush that rapidly turns and “brushes” the top layer of the face. This helps remove surface scars and make deeper acne scars less noticeable. Although this procedure is still effective, it is one of the oldest modalities used and most often replaced by laser treatments.
Dermapen
The Dermapen is a non-invasive treatment that uses needles to pierce the skin and enhance rejuvenation. It is a great option for those who have deep scars that need direct attention. The best part is that it is virtually painless with little to no downtime.
Cosmetic Surgery
Cosmetic surgery can remove deep scarring by literally cutting out individual acne scars. The trade-off is removing a deep crater-like scar for a superficial scar that is easier to conceal with makeup and less noticeable without makeup. This is a minor procedure performed in my office with local anesthesia. Stitches are used to repair the scar and removed 5 to 7 days later.
Dermal Fillers
Injectables, such as Radiesse®, Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvederm®, are used to fill in deep scars and smooth the overlying skin. The results attained from dermal fillers are only temporary, as the patient would have to get reinjections on a continual basis to sustain the results.
