Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic Injection Sites

The use of facial injectables led to a 21 percent increase from 2014 to 2015 according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are two highly popular nonsurgical injectables that Dr. Spies uses to help patients reduce facial wrinkles. These two substances can be used to minimize moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes and brows.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neural inhibitor that reduces muscle activity to prevent wrinkles from showing in certain areas of the face. The FDA has approved BOTOX® Cosmetic for use in minimizing the following types of facial lines and wrinkles:

• Crow’s feet (wrinkles that form at the outer corners of the eyes)
• Frown lines (wrinkles that form between the brows, also called glabellar lines)
• Forehead lines
• Expression lines in the upper face (wrinkles that deepen with facial movements)
• Static wrinkles in the upper face (wrinkles that are always present)

Dysport®

Dysport® is a newer neural inhibitor and is very similar to BOTOX® in substance and purpose, but it is slightly more dilute. Therefore, more Dysport® may be needed to correct wrinkles, but the product also diffuses more easily into the treated area. The cost for either Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic are similar in each area of injection. Dysport® can be used to minimize wrinkles such as the following:

• Crow’s feet
• Frown lines
• Forehead lines
• Expression lines
• Static wrinkles

Improve Signs of Facial Aging By Minimizing Wrinkles in the Upper Face

As indicated above, Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic have overlapping uses. Each can improve the signs of facial aging by blocking the movements of select facial muscles. Both treatments are highly effective and can even reduce moderate to severe wrinkles in the above areas. Since their purpose is to inhibit muscle movement, BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® are not used to correct facial volume loss or wrinkles in the lower face that are caused by skin laxity. With regular treatments using either BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®, patients can achieve a smoother and younger-looking upper face while still maintaining the ability to make natural facial expressions.
