Botox®: How It Works
Posted July 31, 2013 in BOTOX® Cosmetic, Injectables and Fillers, UncategorizedAs time passes and the facial tissues begin to lose elasticity, wrinkles and creases begin to form between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and on the forehead. With movement and sun exposure, these aging factors are difficult to avoid. In order to regain a more youthful appearance, many patients opt for a non-surgical procedure, such as Botox® injections.
Technically referred to as botulinum toxin, this neurotoxic protein is injected into the area being treated with a tiny syringe and needle. This ensures minimal pain and allows for a more precise application. Botox® blocks the nerve impulses to the muscles that are contracting and forming wrinkles and creases on the face. The treatment itself takes just a few minutes to perform and does not require any anesthesia.
It is important to note that Botox® is not a filler injection; rather, this procedure is meant to prevent the underlying muscle from moving and provide a smoother, tighter facial appearance.
Before undergoing Botox® injections, you must also be aware of possible side effects, which may include headaches, droopy appearance of the eyes, and flu-like symptoms. Although rare, these side effects should be brought to your surgeon’s attention as soon as you experience them.
Typically, results can be seen in 5 to 7 days. Although the effects of Botox® injections are not permanent, the results may last up to four to six months. Follow-up injections are recommended if you would like to maintain your more youthful and refreshed facial appearance.
Botox® targets both static and dynamic wrinkles – static wrinkles are those that can be seen when there is no facial movement, whereas dynamic wrinkles are those that are seen when speaking, laughing, and squinting. Based on your needs and my professional advice, we can determine if Botox® is the right choice for you.
