Signs of Leaking Breast Implants

Posted February 21, 2013 in Breast Augmentation, Breast Implants

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic operations I perform. In general, the benefits outweigh the risks for individuals who undergo this procedure. However, like all surgical procedures, there are potential complications that may occur. Rupture or leakage of a breast implant is one possible problem. Here is some information that will help you better understand implant ruptures.

Knowing what type of implant you have will make it easier for you to notice the symptoms of a leaking implant.

Since saline implants are filled with a salt water solution, a leak is usually noticeable to the human eye. The breast will usually decrease in size and become significantly smaller than the opposite breast.

On the other hand, silicone implants are filled with a silicone-gel substance that makes rupture usually undetectable to the naked eye. In fact, if a silicone implant begins to leak, there are often no signs at all that would suggest that the implant has ruptured. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the only sure way to detect a leaky silicone implant.

As I mentioned before, there is always a risk for complications as with any surgery. Having your breast augmentation done by a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery greatly increases your chances for success and can significantly decrease your risk for experiencing complications.

With over 26 years of experience in breast augmentation, I can provide you with state of the art surgery and care. To set up a consultation with me, please feel free to contact my Paradise Valley, Arizona practice at (480) 890-0600 today.
